STORY OF O.G.B.H. LITTLE ATHLETICS
CLUB
|
Ocean Grove Barwon Heads Little Athletics Club has existed for over 30 years. The Club is Non-profit and run exclusively by, dedicated and enthusiastic members of the community. They all volunteer their time and abilities to provide coaching and support for the junior athletes of the region.
Last season we provided support for 110 children registered with our club coming from the Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale, Wallington, Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove districts with a small number from other areas. We offer children from 6yrs to 14yrs an opportunity to participate in a stimulating, healthy program to develop both athletic ability and potential in a nurturing social environment. Summer program consists of 15 weeks local competition with a break over Christmas. In the winter season many children compete in the Cross Country Events. The cross-country season runs for 12 weeks and includes Regional and State finals, the distances run vary from 1000metres to 3000metres according to age.
All children have the opportunity to either achieve personal best result by competing at Local, Regional and State level in a variety of competitions throughout the season eg. Geelong Little Athletics Championships, Regional & State Championships in relay events, track and field events, multi events and handicap events.
We have many children in our region who are excellent little athletes reaching Regional, State and even National Championships and many more who are enjoying the benefits of personal achievement and the camaraderie of a friendly, supportive club.
The children that are competing at a National level and also training with the State Junior Development Squads are invaluable to our club as they provide role models and incentive to other children. Skills they have learned and experiences that they have had at this top level can then be passed on and used to complement training. This also adds to the cohesion between athletes of the club, encouraging them to remain for the life of their athletics experience. Children of all levels of ability are encouraged to participate and have fun.
Over many years the executives of the incumbent committees have battled to gain adequate funding, to provide basic training facilities and resources in the Bellarine Region. They have even had difficulty obtaining a permanent ground to train on. We have recently had an extension built on the Barwon Heads Tennis Club for storage of equipment and have now purchased the larger items such as High Jump equipment for training.
OGBH Little Athletics Club is totally non-profit and runs only through the commitment from parents, friends and the community. It provides an opportunity for children to achieve personal goals in the sport of athletics. |
