     Summer Season General Overview

The summer track and field is held on Saturday mornings between 8:15am and 12:30pm at Landy field in Geelong. The season runs over a 15 week program starting on the first weekend of October with a two to three week break over the Christmas period and ending in late March.

Children compete in the standard athletics program from U8’s to U15’s and a modified program for U7’s called On Track. The little athletics competition is organized in a way that children are encouraged to compete as much against themselves as other children. Each week the athletes receive a ticket from the previous week’s competition that shows their times and distances for each event. In this way athletes can aim to achieve P.B’s or personnel bests and learn that this can be as much fun as winning a race. Races are also organized into heats so that children are running against others at their skill level.

Age groups are set by VLAA with an age group cut off date of September 30th.

On Track

The On Track  program is a Victorian Little Athletics Association initiative to provide all children starting out in the under 7 age group with increased instruction, practice opportunities and motivation. Children are placed in small groups and participate in a range of skills working through a sequential program designed to encourage participation and move through various stages appropriate for their ability. Essentially, the theory is that the under 7s will learn the simple, basic skills that provide the framework upon which the learning of athletic skills depends. The program goes for 90 minutes each week during the track and field season and is conducted out in the parkland to the west of the track and on the track. There will be a "championship day" where they compete in the 100m, long jump, shot put and 400m.
